Hungary: legal Work & Residence pathway

Starting your own business in Hungary

Useful for long-term planning — but only with real activity

Buying a ready-made company or registering a new one can support residence planning, but it is not an automatic guarantee of a residence permit or citizenship.

      Common formats
      • Limited liability company
      • Joint-stock company

Registration is typically done via Hungarian lawyers. Founders provide company name, legal address and shareholder details.

      Key rule (important)
For long-term legal stay, the company must operate in reality: generate profit, pay taxes, keep accounting, and follow compliance rules.
      !
      Important clarification
Registering a company does not replace a work visa or residence permit.
      Notes
This is a base list; the embassy may request additional papers. Category D is long-term; typical validity is 1 year with extension options.

Residence permit in Hungary for foreigners

Since 2014, the process has been simplified: the residence permit request is often submitted together with the work authorization — one combined procedure.

The permit is issued for the duration of the employment contract and can be extended if conditions remain unchanged. Renewal is typically filed before expiration (practically, submit early to avoid gaps).

If you change the employer or role, the permit may need re-issuance depending on the program rules.

      Hungarian ID-card (overview)

A residence permit — and, under separate legal conditions, citizenship — can open opportunities for work, business and education in Europe.

      • legal residence in the Schengen area based on your status
      • access to healthcare services (program/status-dependent)
      • business-friendly environment and banking access
      • digital services authorization (e.g., online banking) with ID-card

Important: benefits depend on your exact status (visa, permit, citizenship). VISA-SVIT helps prepare compliant documents and reduce refusal risks.

Required documents for employment in Hungary

Main documents: work permit (program-dependent) and national visa category D.

      Also required:

      • valid foreign and national passport
      • health insurance for the contract period
      • education/qualification certificates (if applicable)
      • employer invitation / letter of intent and employment contract

Language requirements depend on the vacancy. English/German is a strong advantage. Authorities may check compliance, health and visa history. Applicant must have housing and funds for the initial period.

      Stages of cooperation with VISA-SVIT
