For some reason, the Russian government doesn't like the UK. Perhaps because it is a smarter opponent for Russia than America. The collapse of Great Britain is the cherished dream of the government of the Russian Federation.
The popularity of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson came along with his pre-election idea - to withdraw the UK from the EU.
Over the past year, he spoke so beautifully about the benefits of independence and insisted on respecting the opinions of the country's inhabitants. Recall that during the referendum, the majority voted for Brexit. Such separatist views brought Johnson a victory in Parliament. He won the vast majority of seats in parliament. According to his plan, Great Britain will gain independence by the end of January.
Perhaps he should rejoice in such success. However, it is not. In the elections in December, his party won a victory throughout the Kingdom. But in Scotland, the picture is completely different. There, the overwhelming number of votes went to the local national party. The program of this party is completely different from Johnson's plans. The only common thing is that both want absolute independence.
The only difference is that Scotland does not want the independence of Great Britain from the European Union, but of its territories from the United Kingdom. To do this, the Scottish authorities want to hold another referendum. This goes against Johnson's desires and aspirations. Because with such a development of events, Great Britain will regain the borders that it had during the Middle Ages.
The Prime Minister sent a letter to Edinburgh outlining the rules for voting for independence. The bottom line is that such referendums can take place once a generation. The last such vote took place in 2014, the results of which showed the desire of people to live under the rule of London. Therefore, a second referendum is possible only after 20 years.
However, Scotland is not satisfied with this answer. According to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in 2014, people voted for a life in a whole UK within the EU. And if the United Kingdom leaves the EU, it will be a different state. In such a case, there can be no unity with Westminster without mutual understanding.
Scottish nationalists were not surprised by the refusal of London, they were even ready for it. According to Sturgeon, in a democratic state, the authorities will not be able to hold back the people for a long time and prohibit the holding of a referendum. Sooner or later people will realize their plans.
In the meantime, the Scots have no choice but to follow:
1st - the consequences of Brexit. According to economists' forecasts, independence from the EU will have a very strong impact on the country's economy. In this case, much more territories will want independence from London.
The outcome of Brexit will greatly affect the politics of Scotland. Local elections will be held in 2021. If the Scots get the overwhelming majority of votes in this election, their lives will change radically.
Then they will be able to hold a referendum themselves. In this case, they do not need permission from London. This can only be prevented by force. All this is reminiscent of the Catalan scenario of 2017. Then the Spanish authorities, with the help of force and the army, suppressed the desire of the Catalans to secede and gain independence, independence.
The UK is trying to avoid this scenario. Because it will be a very tough step on the part of the government. Most likely in the coming years we will observe the holding of a referendum on Scottish self-determination.
