The newly elected head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that one and a half million Ukrainian "refugees" left for Poland from Ukraine.
She stated this in an interview with DieWelt.
The head of the European Commission noted that it is necessary to listen to the arguments of countries such as Poland or Hungary, which are against quotas for migrants from Africa and the Middle East.
“The issue of migration will be with us for decades. For example, Poland claims to have taken in 1.5 million Ukrainians, from a country where a hybrid war has been going on for years in which people keep dying. We cannot ignore this,” Leyen said.
According to her, one of his main tasks in his new post, the head of the European Commission considers the strengthening of the European border protection agency Frontex. At the same time, she is pushing for a reform of the Dublin system, which she considers very unfair.
In addition, the head of the European Commission stressed that a “humane approach” should be applied to the issue of refugees, since saving is a humanitarian duty, but those who do not have the right to asylum must be sent back without any hesitation.
It should be noted that according to the Ukrainian Embassy in Poland, during 2016-2017, only 88 Ukrainians received refugee status.
“During 10 months of 2017, the competent authorities of Poland granted refugee status to 56 citizens of Ukraine (in 2016 - 32) and 175 decisions were made to grant Ukrainians the status of a person in need of additional protection (in 2016 there were 64 such decisions)”, - the message says.
